The inaugural Fire Door Safety Week runs from 16-21 September 2013 and aims to raise awareness of this critical element of fire safety in every commercial, public and multiple occupancy building.
Supported by various industry partners and the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme, the campaign aims to:
- Improve awareness of the importance of fire doors, specifically concerning the huge difference that poor installation and maintenance can make.
- Encourage managers and users to check the operation and condition of their fire doors and to report any defects.
- Engage and educate to assist the building industry and property owners to understand the correct specification, supply, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance of fire doors.
About 3 million new fire doors are bought and installed every year in the UK, and in a recent review of 100 prosecutions made under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, fire doors were the second highest reason for prosecutions.
John Fletcher, Manager of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme, which is behind the initiative, said:
“A fire door is no ordinary door. It’s an engineered safety device, and can save lives and property if made, fitted and maintained properly.”
To promote the event, a range of activities has been taking place online and across the UK. To get involved and obtain a free poster for building tenants, visit www.firedoorsafetyweek.co.uk.
